155 years of counting South Africans
The first census to be conducted in what is now South Africa was a 1865 census of the Cape of Good Hope. The Union of South Africa was formed in 1910, and a census followed shortly in 1911 (population: 5 973 394). Census’ continued to be conducted roughly every 5 years however, many of these census’ only counted the white population.
