The first documented mention of a cricket bat dates back 400 years ago, when an inquest was held following the death of a fielder after being struck by a batsman. It was suggested that the batsman used his bat to obstruct the fielder from catching the ball, possibly setting the stage for what later became Law 37: Obstructing the Field.
