The bikini swimsuit, introduced by French designer Louis Réard in 1946, was named after Bikini Atoll—a small ring of coral islands used for U.S. military nuclear tests. Réard chose the name “bikini” because he believed his swimsuit would create a sensation similar to the explosive impact of a bomb.
