Alexandra Burnt Down
In 2019, a fire broke out in the Stjwetla informal settlement in Alexandra, Johannesburg. The fire started due to an unattended brazier, it then spread and burnt down an 88kv electrical pylon (capable of supplying electricity to roughly 400 homes). In the the aftermath of the devastation, 1500 people were affected by the fire and about 500 homes were destroyed. The cost of repairing the infrastructure after the fire is estimated at R3m-R5m.
