An intoxicating crisis
South Africa has an alcohol consumption problem. According to the WHO, in 2016, 7% of South Africans (12.4% of men) had an alcohol use disorder, compared to just 3.7% in the WHO African region. South African men on average drank 16.2 litres of pure alcohol per year, 6 times more than the 2.7 litres consumed by South African women.
