The total economic value of South Africa’s kelp forest ecosystems are estimated at R5.8bn per year. Kelp and other seaweed are used mainly as a food source for abalone, but increasingly they are being used as a tool for bioremediation and as biomass for biofuel. Afrikelp, a company based in Cape Town, is processing kelp into a biostimulant for agricultural use.
