Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?

According to the results of the ten-year-long PIRLS study published in 2016, in South Africa – 49% of Grade 5 Learners did not reach the lowest standard of the international benchmark for literacy in their language of schooling instruction, with only 2% able to attain the advanced benchmark. It was found that among the sample, 25% of Grade 5 learners attended a school with insufficient learning resources.
