The Ebola outbreak of 2014 had a mortality rate of around 60% and claimed more than 11 000 lives, with Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia bearing the brunt of the loss. More than a year after the outbreak started, in May 2015, Liberia became the first of the three countries to be declared Ebola-free.
