Back to the Stars for the USA
On Saturday, 30 May 2020, NASA and SpaceX launched the Falcon-9 rocket carrying the Crew Dragon spacecraft to deliver 2 astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS). The historic launch was the first crewed launch from the United States to orbit since NASA’s space shuttle program ended in 2011. It was also the first privately designed and manufactured rocket to be used in a crewed mission to space. Compared to an average NASA space shuttle mission that cost US$1.6 billion, NASA is estimated to be paying only $55 million per seat for SpaceX’s ISS flights, marking another leap forward for the American private sector Space Race.
