The brain-eating amoeba, Naegleria fowleri, is a heat-tolerant organism commonly found in warm freshwater environments, such as hot springs, lakes, and poorly maintained swimming pools. Water containing the amoeba can enter the nasal passage, causing a severe brain infection with a fatality rate exceeding 97%.

    Wow Wow Wow! This is hectic. Is this Naegleria Fowleri common in SA?

      Very hectic! It’s found is warm freshwater environment all around the world including South Africa – thriving in water temperatures between 25° and 40°. Although contact is quite common, actually contracting an infection is extremely rare.
