There is a shortage of more than 100,000 qualified truck drivers in the UK, caused by both the Covid-19 Pandemic as well as the changes in emigration rules since Brexit. Shortages are also being experienced in other industries which relied on EU workers, such as abattoirs – 6,600 healthy pigs had to be destroyed due to backlogs. This has led Richard Walker, managing director of Iceland Foods, to warn that Christmas may be ‘cancelled’.
