The Marula fruit, essential for South Africa’s Amarula cream liqueur, only grows in Africa’s subequatorial plains. Large quantities of the nuts have been found in Zimbabwe’s ancient Pomongwe Cave, dating back to over 10,000 years ago. It has been estimated that around 24m marula fruits have been consumed in this cave over the years.
