Fred Lorz was first to cross the finish line in the 1904 St Louis Olympics marathon race, but moments later was disqualified for covering nearly half the race in a car. Gold medallist winner, Thomas Hicks, almost died due to drinking a mix of strychnine sulfate (common rat poison) and brandy. (http://bit.ly/VK39Xf)
