Approximately 1m births were registered in South Africa in 2020. Of the 112,127 that were registered to mothers aged 10-19, more than 4,000 were registered to children between 10-14 years. The overall 5% increase in teen pregnancy from 2019 has been linked to the difficulty in accessing contraceptives and sexual and reproductive healthcare services during the COVID-19 lockdown.
