According to Census 2011, there were 1.25 million households in South Africa living in shacks not in backyards. Six district municipalities across the country accounted for 58% of these households, namely City of Cape Town, Ekurhuleni, City of Johannesburg, City of Tshwane, eThekwini, and Bojanala.
