As of 29 June 2021, Gauteng has become the epicentre of the third COVID-19 wave where 51% of the 154,000 active cases in South Africa are found, with 9,000 new cases 29 June alone. The third wave has placed significant pressure on the Gauteng healthcare system and has led to ICU patients being transferred out of the province to KZN.
