   One wonders about the involvement of mini-bus taxis in these collisions – where are those numbers?

   That’s a joke! They are predicting that deaths in 2012 will be approximately half those in 2007? What are they smoking? They have NEVER succeeded in reducing traffic deaths – even the 2009/10 figures are highly suspect because they compile them in early January for the preceding year before they have received figures from hospitals and outlying districts, in an attempt to show that they are being effective! With more cars on the road, no curbing of high speeds, corrupt officials who don’t do their jobs, the figure can only keep rising

      Whose they? Should the government take responsibility for drunk drivers, reckless drivers and unroadworthy cars in ours roads?Let’s take some responsibility on this one. “They” can only do so much. My opinion is that these figures should be accurate if all “cause of death” in every death certificate issued in SA are captured.

   I think SA Breweries should take some responsibility too. What proportion of accidents involve a drunk driver or a drunk pedestrian? The hospitals must know this. My guess is it’s probably upwards of 80%.

   Road fatalities are certainly not dropping – only the quality of data capture / reporting. Percentage drunk drivers / pedestrians- difficult to know accurately since limited blood-alcohol recording. My experience – alcohol involvement still way too high, but certainly less than 50% of these events. Other causes such as unsafe / overloaded vehicles (taxis, buses), driver fatigue + error, damaged roads / road-works, adverse weather play a major role. We need serious improvement in alcohol testing / data capture to get an accurate answer to this issue…
