   I am not sure where this stat comes from – I presume SA…. or how it was gathered or where this is recorded… how long does “involved in starting” last – a month, a year? or is it something people are maybe planning to do? If the stat is “true”, it is really surprising though as I know lots of people who have started businesses in the last 4 years as they left fulltime employment. In our family alone, both adults are self employed and have their own businesses.

   As UCT’s Datafirst reported, the Adcorp employment index has lost all credibility and amounts to no more than a source of free advertising so I would take this with a pinch of salt

      Jack – thank you for noting that there have, in fact, been debates about these figures.

         I am very aware with the raging debate. However, an independent source is the form of UCTs datafirst has looked at both sides and totally rubbished Adcoprs index as being void of any scientific rigour whatsoever, hence my comments (unless you are yourself from Adcorp, and are trying to save what little credibility is left). Read the comments to the articles you attached and the others articles on this issue on the same website and you will see where public sentiment lies.

   1) Anecdotal evidence suggests that entrepreneurial/informal employment is more formalised(i.e. registered), so that fact is, to my mind, suspect.
