   I ask you (with tears in my eyes) can these teachers not count or can these teachers not be counted?

   If you had 552 123 Rands in the bank both you and the bank would know this, so how come nobody knows exactly how many teachers we have?

   Teachers in general and those in further education have to be registered with the South
   African Council for Educators (SACE). However, it is important to remember that not all of the 560,000 will be active teachers, or even potentially available to teach, but simply those who registered at some time.

   Estimates from the survey data provide information on those who say they are currently employed as teachers.

   I think you confuse the word ‘facts’ as in Facts a Day, with ‘estimations’ (as in the case of this data). What would be of interest is to know the exact amount of teachers registered at SACE, whether those included in the tally exclude any teacher currently employed by schools, how many of these teachers are qualified, under-qualified and unqualified, what is the relationship between the highly functioning schools and their teacher qualifications and those dysfunctional schools and their qualifications, etc. Let be real in the data we need to make informed decisions about what is going on in education.
