   Also a very misleading factoid.

   Actually 65% of SA households have no-one with access to the Internet.

   So 35% of households have at least one member with access to the Internet.

   In about half of those households, that member’s access is via a cellphone…

   In about a quarter of those households, that access is via work or somewhere else.

   In fact only just over 8% of SA households have access to the Internet at home on a device other than a cell phone…

      Charley – thank you for your comment. Let me try to clarify the fact for you.

      The question in the Census is not about whether the household only accesses the internet in their home. The question is about whether the household has access at all: “How does this household mainly access internet?”

      The responses were as following: 9% from home, 16% from cell phone, 5% from work, and 6% from elsewhere. The remaining 65% of SA households have no access to internet.

   Yes, I know all that. I have the spreadsheet.

   And, yes, your fact dealt with the 65%, not the 35%.

   My concern is that far too many commentators fail to look behind that 35%, and glibly report that 35% of South Africans are Internet users, which I think grossly over-simplifies the dynamics of the situation, and hence the challenges of redressing it…

   With respect – and I do have a LOT of respect for your daily factoids – if that 65% figure comes from Census 2011, it can surely only be the highest rated fact of 2011, not 2013? I expect the figure to be quite different today – and also, Whats App usage since then must have skyrocketed and internet usage/access with it. Finally, does this figure include mobile internet access? I suspect the figure would be even more radically different if so…
