Excluded by design
The Expanded Unemployment Rate increased by 2.3% in Q2 2020 and now stands at 42%. This metric takes into account people currently unemployed and available for work, but who did not look for work. This group includes ‘discouraged job seekers’ and is controversial as it can make the ‘official’ unemployment rate look better. Sadly, in a country like South Africa, many people cannot afford the cost of looking for work, so fall into this category by design, not choice.
