In February 2021, a wildfire began in the Overberg Mountains and spread to the Jonkershoek Valley, destroying more than 13,600 hectares; an area roughly 13 times the size of Stellenbosch. This region, which should burn every nine to 10 years, has seen 3 wildfires in the last 12 years.
