Fungal Fight for the Fynbos
The Port Jackson, a tree introduced into South Africa from Australia, has become invasive in the fynbos regions of the Western Cape. Starting in 1988, a rust fungus, Uromycladium tepperianum, was introduced into South Africa to control the spread of Port Jackson. The fungus has successfully helped to reduce the population densities of the tree by 80% without any known harm to the broader ecology.
