Gambling with your health?
Based on data gathered by the National Gambling Board in 2018, 27 973 people were directly employed in South Africa’s gambling sector, and 56% were employed in casinos. As casinos open their doors, we expect these people to return to work. According to the ROOTS 2019 data, an estimated 1.5 million people visited casinos in the 3 months prior to the survey, and 39% of these casino goers engaged in gambling. 12% of these casino goers are at least 60 years or older which places them in the high-risk Covid-19 category.
