Although volcanoes can cause huge amounts of destruction, there are some positives to the super heated rocks and liquid that lie under the earth’s surface. In 2018 it was estimated that ~83bn kWh of electricity were generated worldwide using geothermal energy. The US generated the largest geothermal electricity, producing 17bn kWh, followed by Indonesia with 14bn kWh. Kenya had the highest contribution of geothermal energy to total annual electricity generation at 46%.
