The Moon is moving away from Earth at around 3.78cm per year (about as quickly as one’s fingernails grow). According to National Geographic, the Moon was once 10 times closer to Earth than it is today, and in roughly 5 billon years the Moon will move far away enough to be consumed by the Sun.
