From December 2003 to December 2008, South Africa’s Appliances CPI grew at a compounded annual growth rate of 0.4%. For the country’s CPIX, the figure is 6.4% per annum (Statistics South Africa)

    How does this compare with the exchange rate over the period? If most of our household appliances are imported, perhaps the low rate of annual growth is because it was offset by an improving exchange rate?

    Winston – no, both figures are average annual compounded rates over the period December 2003 to December 2008. They are directly comparable. Perhaps we could have stated this more clearly.

    Just had a look at this statistic…..

    In this fact, surely, while the Appliance Index may be a compounded perfrmance, the CPIX of 6.4% is not a compounded figure? So, while the comparability wont be much affected, should this not be stated?
