GRID to COVID
In June 1981 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported the first AIDS cases in the US. These first cases were two homosexual men, which lead to officials dubbing it the “gay-related immunodeficiency disease” (GRID). The CDC’s response during this time was criticized for promoting policy that harmed HIV+ people and providing ineffective public education. Over the next decade, state and local health departments had reported 179,136 AIDS cases in the US to the CDC. (https://bit.ly/2S05o7Y, https://bit.ly/2yEbfJm, https://bit.ly/3cDRel1)
