In recent years, student debt in South Africa has ballooned from R14bn at the end of 2019 to around R16.5bn in March 2022. Moreover, in March 2022, more than 120 000 students were unable to graduate due to unpaid fees. These students collectively owe their respective universities around R7bn in arrears fees.
