Human Rights Day
Human Rights Day is a reminder for all South Africans about the sacrifices that accompanied the struggle for democracy in South Africa. This day is commemorated on, and historically linked with, 21 March and the events that happened in Sharpeville in 1960. On that day, 69 people died and 180 were wounded when police fired on a peaceful crowd that had gathered in protest against the Pass laws. Today the Bill of Rights is enshrined in our constitution, protecting South Africans from human rights infringements.
Congratulations to Duncan Drennan who submitted the oldest fact, from October 2005, a month after our first fact
