Between 1941 and 1942 Mandela lived in Alexandra, in what is Municipal Ward 107 today. He said that it was the first place he ever lived away from home, and described the accommodation as being a tin-roofed room at the back of the main house, no more than a shack, with a dirt floor, no heat, no electricity, and no running water.
