23% of employed people in South Africa are members of a trade union. For the mining and quarrying industries, the percentage is 80%, the highest of all industries. In terms of business sector, those in the public sector are far more likely to be part of a union than those that work for a private enterprise (62% versus 16%). (LFS 2015 Q1)
