Indexes are powerful indicators for global economies. The Wilshire 5 000 includes all the stocks from the US stock market which make up about 55% of the global stock market by value. The most popular indexes are the Dow Jones Industrial Average, Nasdaq Composite and the S&P 500. The S&P 500 Index represents approximately 80% of the total value of the US stock market. Locally, we have the FTSE/JSE Top40 which represents 80% of the total market cap of all JSE listed companies.
