Industrial Revolutions
The right to strike and engage in industrial action is enshrined in the South African constitution. However, when protracted, they can come at a cost. The last Industrial Action Report released by the Department of Labour highlighted that more than 1.1m working days were lost in 2018, an increase of 21% compared with 2017. Ultimately, these work stoppages resulted in workers losing an estimated R266m in wages in 2018 due to strike activities.
