Informal Infrastructure, Fierce Fires
In September 2020, a fire in Imizamo Yethu, Hout Bay destroyed at least 200 structures leaving 800 people displaced from their homes. It took about 80 firefighters from 14 different stations roughly 10 hours to extinguish the blaze. Sadly, the cramped conditions and poor infrastructure in informal settlements nationwide provide perfect conditions for an out of control fire.
