In June 2023, a group of scientists, lead by Nikole Lewis, will use the James Webb Telescope to start observing TRAPPIST-1e, an exoplanet that orbits the dwarf star TRAPPIST-1. The telescope can look for specific biosignatures, and if the right conditions are observed, it can be used to look for signs of pollutants (such as chlorofluorocarbons), which are harder to connect to natural causes, as evidence of advanced civilizations.
