   I think the credit crunch proves that it was more about who has access to money than how well they really are doing. Corruption also plays a big role – our wealthy political figures and their well-connected families are a good example.

   You can only really know how well they are doing if you have access to their balance sheet. They may have a lot a assets but they may have a lot of high interest debt on the other side. Of course, if you are in a society were hardly anyone can borrow or choose not to borrow then asset ownership might be a good indicator of real wealth.
