Approximately 300 valid genera and 700 valid species of non-avian dinosaurs have been discovered and named since the first scientifically-named dinosaur species; Megalosaurus in 1824. However, due to the fact that fossils need very specific conditions to be preserved, the overall fossil record is incomplete – these numbers likely do not reflect the true diversity of extinct dinosaurs.
