Language of protest
Youth day, June 16, commemorates the Soweto Uprising. In 1974 English and Afrikaans were made the compulsory medium of teaching, and students began to mobilise in response. on 16 June 1976 between 3,000 and 10,000 students marched peacefully to protest the new rules. Official records report that 23 people were killed during this protest, though some reports estimate that at least 200 people were killed. (https://bit.ly/3fn6EeT)
