The word ‘philanthropy’ comes from the ancient Greek word philanthrōpos, meaning ‘man-loving’ (i.e. ‘humankind-loving’). José Mujica was the president of Uruguay from 2010 to 2015. During his term, he turned down the luxurious residence in which Uruguayan heads of state normally reside, instead, choosing to live with his wife in their one-bedroom house outside Montevideo. While president, José donated around 90% of his $12,000 presidential salary to charity, putting his income in the same ballpark as the average Uruguayan. (https://bbc.in/2LxGI1C)
