   Strange given that 10 Oct statistic states we are producing a third of the teacher requirement – the two seem contradictory.

   This is interesting but what is the analysis? More teachers or less students? Is the outcome positive or negative? What about quality?

   The teacher – child ratio is a very deceptive measure. As it is not indicative of what is happening in the classroom. In order to calculate the ratio, all support staff the D of Education are included – admin, cleaners, security, inspectors etc. So the actual classroom situation means that there are more often than not 60 plus learners in a class. Would be great to try and work out the real ratio.

   Nicci is correct – in reality the teacher/learner ratio can be anything from 45 to 60 plus. However, with assistance, correct and relevant equipment one may still be able to cope. This is not the case. Only 28% of the learners in Grade 3 are on the correct reading level and this percentage decreases drastically as we progress through the grade levels. I suggest that we forget about the ratios and focus on equipping the teachers with skills and proper equipment and classrooms. This is our future we are talking about and the Education Department – well they are more concerned about when tea time is.

   This is a crazy situation and another of the present wrongs. These teacher are SO not qualified to teach, in fact they need to be educated to teach. Just another example of the terrible governance at present. Personally I think that the ANC don’t what to educate the masses, they are an easy targets to convince for votes – just give them some grant money, and a T-shirt + food parcels at there rallies etc. By the way, funerals are perfect platforms to campaign.
