   These results could be misleading. I would like to see the 1995/1996 year compared to the 2008/2009 year. We had a world cup this year which by all reports was relatively crime free and this could skew results as the police presence day to day is nothing compared to what it was during the tournament.

   According to the same report, the number of murders in 2008/2009 was 18 148 (compared to 16 834 in 2009/2010). The incidence of crime per 100 000 of the population in 2008/2009 was 37.3 (compared to 34.1 in 2009/2010).

   In addition, the financial year considered for 2009/2010 is 1 April 2009 to 31 March 2010, before the World Cup got underway.

   I agree with this stats, but what they don’t say is that farm murders increased drastically over the last decade…

   16 834 murders a year means 46 a day! Scary.

   With a virtually nil apprehension rate maybe people are just not reporting murders in many cases

   There was still a great deal of political faction fighting in 1995 which accounted for a lot of deaths, classified as murder.
