Megadiverse
South Africa is one of 17 countries classified as ‘megadiverse’. These countries represent less than 10% of the earth’s surface but support more than 70% of its animal and plant species between them. SA ranks 3rd in the world for biodiversity (after Brazil and Indonesia); it contains nearly 10% of all known species of birds, fish and plants and 6% of mammal and reptile species.
