Mount Nyiragongo
On 22 May 2021, Mount Nyiragongo in the Democratic Republic of the Congo erupted with rivers of lava that turned the night sky red. The volcano caused a mass evacuation of the city of Goma in the east of the country which has a population of more than 670,000. The city was largely spared but thousands evacuated the city and at least 30 people lost their lives.
