Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918, in Umtata, Eastern Cape. Named “Rolihlahla,” a Xhosa term meaning “troublemaker” and literally “pulling the branch of a tree,” he received the English name “Nelson” at age seven when he enrolled in a Christian missionary school.
