Sandy Island was first recorded on a map by a whaling ship called “Velocity” in 1876 off the coast of New Caledonia. It appeared as a dark spot on Google Earth until 2012 when a group of scientists from the University of Sydney sailed through the area and discovered that the island actually does not exist.
