   These statistics are fascinating indeed. They reflect a situation that is further removed from hopelessness than what I imagined. If one considers that, from this tiny fraction of the South African population alone, the DSTV suppliers are receiving a monthly income of approx R17,25 million, then things are not quite as bad as they would seem. I have had the unique experience of meeting extremely wealthy people who live in shacks and have no intention of moving to greener pastures. They unanimously claimed that they experienced no problem with living the way they do, adding that the little to no cost of accommodation, electricity or municipal taxes helped them to achieve their wealth and what they considered sufficiently comfortable living conditions. They also were quite happy to have their children growing up under what many would consider to be appalling conditions. I saw far more happy, smiling faces in Khayelitsha than I ever saw in opulent suburbs. How is one really supposed to answer the question,- “Where or in what does true happiness exist?”
