Power at altitude
More than 11,793 kg of human excrement is dumped at Mount Everest’s Base Camp annually. Thereafter it is taken to Gorak Shep, a frozen lakebed that’s become Everest’s ad-hoc landfill. A seasoned climber and retired Boeing Company engineer, Garry Porter is tackling this issue. He co-founded the Mount Everest Biogas Project, and is proposing using a biodigester to turn the human excrement into usable methane gas, which could in the future power electrical devices, such as laptops and cellphones on Everest.
