The tallest volcanic plume on Earth may have reached 45-50 km high. It rose from the Taupo, New Zealand eruption in 186 AD. In contrast, the New Horizons spacecraft spotted a volcanic plume approximately 165 km tall rising from Tvashtar Patera, a volcano on Io (one of Jupiter’s moons).
