Rain Queens of the Balobedu
Since the early 19th century, there have been seven Rain Queens of the Balobedu people, one of the few tribal monarchies officially recognised by the South African government. The Rain Queen presides over annual rain-making ceremonies, which involve offerings of crops and livestock, the blowing of a ceremonial rain horn, and communal prayers. These rituals are believed by the Balobedu people to invoke rain for the region.
